MINISTRIES

Support Westminster ministries and mission. A sampler of opportunities is listed on this page and on other pages in this section. If you have a specific interest that you do not see listed or you have questions, contact the church office at 583-1729 or westminsterdbq@mchsi.com.

Be a Mission/Ministry Volunteer

Respond to Christ's call in the life and community of Westminster ministries this year. Reach out as a tutor, serve meals, sing, play, greet, advise, teach. Different levels of commitment are needed: from once a month to twice a week. No matter how much time you can give, every person matters!

Weekly Offerings

Our offering each Sunday of each month can support specific mission in the Dubuque area. Bring a designated offering or the products listed below:

  • 1st Sunday: Dubuque Area Congregations United Food Pantry. Bring boxed and canned goods for needy individuals and families
  • 2nd Sunday: Teresa Shelter. Bring paper products (paper towels, diapers, toilet tissue, etc.) for women and children in emergency housing.
  • 3rd Sunday: Westminster's Deacons Emergency Fund. Help pay fuel, utility, rent, and grocery bills for families refered to Westminster.
  • 4th Sunday: Camp Wyoming Presbyterian Camp. Support the nearby Presbyterian camp that Westminster children attend.

Tutoring: Irving 3rd-5th Graders

Tutoring is a challenging and rewarding mission opportunity. Westminster's tutoring program is very appreciated by the staff at Irving Elementary School, and we make a HUGE difference in the lives of these kids. You do not need prior experience. Materials are provided. We tutor on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, 3:30-5:00 p.m. Volunteer as a regular tutor or substitute, (Tuesdays, Thursdays, or both) or to bring the kids from Irving to Westminster. Learn more by contacting the church office at 583-1729.

Wednesday Meals

Volunteers assist the church cooks, serve meals, and clean up afterwards at noon and in the evening from September through May. This is an excellent opportunity to meet a cross-section of Westminster youth and adults.

Westminster Tables ministers to students from the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary.  This weekly meal is an opportunity to reach out to the UDTS community.  Volunteers provide support on Wednesdays from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Wednesday Evening Meals has become important in the life of our church. Volunteers staff two shifts:

  • prepare/serve/clean up    4:30 - 6:15 p.m.
  • serve/clean up                 6:15 -7:30 p.m.

If you are interested, but cannot commit to a regular shift, volunteer to be a substitute when needed. Call the church office at 583-1729 for more information.

Scrip

Scrip sellers support Westminster youth programs. Income from scrip sales maintains the church van and supports youth mission trips and  Scrip is sold each Sunday before and after the worship service.

Music

All God's people have a place in the choir; some sing low, some sing higher! Westminster music groups are open to all interested in worshipping God in music.

If you like to sing, join a choir! The Adult Choir meets Wednesday evenings, 7:30-9:00 p.m., in the balcony. The Children's Choir meets Wednesdays, 5:30-6:30 p.m., in the Choir Room.

Do you play an instrument? Adult Handbells meet Wednesday, 5:15-6:00 p.m. in the balcony. Youth Handbells meet Wednesday, 6:30-7:15 p.m. in the balcony. Church Band rehearses the third Sunday of the month, 11:45 a.m. in the choir room.

Solo and group voices and instruments also provide anthems and offertories, especially in the summer.

"Worship is the Work of the People"

We celebrate the Presbyterian tradition that "worship is the work of the people." Be one of the out front "workers" on Sunday morning. Sign up to read the scripture, lead the Call to Worship and Prayer of Confession, or to lead the Prayer of Dedication as we receive our offering.
